Christmas Meeting 7th December

The final race meeting of the season and a chance to celebrate Christmas. The day started with hot mulled wine, ably prepared and served by Sue and Steve, nibbles followed and the early dark clouds cleared away to leave blue skies and sunshine for most of the day. Racing was in three weight groups plus veterans at half a yard/lb and a yard per year. All three weight groups had winners that were unbeaten on the day, Viv's Cheeky Devil won his heat and then the lightweight final in fine style from Sally's Hot Right Now in second place. John and Lorraine's Backchat repeated that feat in the middleweight group and in what probably was the race of the day, took the win from Sara's Harvest Moon. There was no stopping Jeanette's brilliant Chermayeff in the heavyweight group as he took the win from Tina and Colin's Dillinger. In what was a complete reverse from the heat, Phyll's Woodleigh Amber won the veteran final - Phyll was delighted as this was Amber's first ever win in the six years that she has been racing so a special congratulations are in order. Congratulations also to Pete and Sam's recently cleared Blue - now to be known as Whitby Jet - who took part in his first race meeting today and Daphne's Little Gem who won the consolation final in the lightweight group in her first run. John and Lorraine's Jacob and Steph and Doug's Babe continued to trial well and it was lovely to welcome Pete and Lisa to the club with young Roxy who went very well on her first visit to the track. After racing we all gathered back round the caravan for more nibbles and our Christmas raffle. A big thank you to everyone that brought along a contribution. I have also been asked to make special mention to the fabulous quiches cooked by Sue and Steve. As you can imagine, we all went home full of food as well as Christmas cheer! At the end of the day we made an extra special presentation to our Top Newcomer of the year 2014 - Pat's Mr Trotter. Pat travels up from Paignton most sundays to race with us and is unable to travel up to our AGM in January when club annual awards are usually presented, so we wanted her to receive Rodney's award while everyone was present. Congratulations to Pat and Mr Trotter (full results from the club points leagues to follow).

23rd November
We have been so lucky with the weather for most of our club meetings but today the rain set in and fell persistently until pretty much the time we started to pack away at the end of the day. With over 40 dogs on the race card it was looking like it was going to be a good meeting. The first few trials went well; Pete and Sam's Blue passed his clearing trials and a few other youngsters looked good with company, but unfortunately an electrical fire in the box that starts the traps meant that the racing had to be curtailed before the first race was even completed. Determined not to be beat the meeting went ahead with dogs being slipped in twos, threes and even a few fours, this meant that all dogs had a run and most owners went home happy - if not a bit wet! A warm welcome to the new faces who joined us at the track today including Peter and Nicky with Nelson and Magic. Huge thanks to all of the workers who carried on regardless of the deteriorating conditions, especially to those that came to help despite having no dogs to run themselves. As a thank you for your patience and understanding to those racers that entered and paid today, we will offer half price racing fees for our final meeting of the year which takes place in two weeks time on the 7th December. All welcome.

9th November
After a four week break in racing since the final National Championships of 2014 which were held at our track it was nice to get back to the field and give the dogs a run. We could not have picked a better day as the sun shone throughout and the track was perfect despite almost monsoon conditions and localised flooding in the area just 24 hours earlier. Dogs were split into three weight groups plus veterans and there were plenty of dogs trialling. To continue her unbeaten run, Andy and Linda's Another Millworth took the lightweight group with ease and this was followed by a comfortable win for Steve's youngster Red Apache in the middleweight group and Jeanette's Chermayeff in the heavyweight. Sara's Star of Twilight is the club's newest veteran and he reversed the result of the heat to take the win from Angie and Mike's Savernake Flash of Red. All at Andover would like to send their best wishes to Tina and Colin and hope for a full recovery for their old boy Big Ron. Our next meeting will take place on Sunday 23rd November, this will be a graded meeting off club handicap.

Today we held an extra club meeting to accommodate some scratch practice ahead of the upcoming Fourth National Championships which are being held at the club next weekend. There were plenty of dogs trialling with John and Lorraine's Jake and litter brother Babe belonging to Doug and Steph both looking good. Sunday 31st August
Another sunny sunday club racing at Andover. A good entry of dogs saw us running in three weight groups with veterans. The distance was 150 yds at half a yard/lb. Winning her first Andover final in the lightweight group was Vino (19lbs) belonging to Dave and Myra, from Sue and Steve's Kinda Hot (20lbs) in second. The middleweight group was won by Steve's youngster Agile Approach who was running off a puppy handicap of 23lbs, with a good run to get second place was Angie and Mike's Savernake Sporting Gun (24lbs). The Heavyweight group was won by Jean's Kai Kai (28lbs) from Tina and Colin's Dillinger (28lbs) in second, while Tina and Colin's Shadow (28lbs, 6) went one place better to win the Veteran group once again. There were plenty of dogs trailing with Angie and Mike's Barley looking close to clearing now. Pete and Sam's Blue went well after a four week break from the track and we welcomed Misty and her family. Misty went very well in her first ever trial and looked a natural. After racing we were entertained by Tina and Andy doing the Ice Bucket Challenge for Macmillan cancer care - we all went away smiling and looking forward to a trials meeting next week ahead of our open on the 14th September.

Sunday 10th August
We were lucky that the early rain cleared in time for racing and we enjoyed a good day of club racing against a backdrop of mainly blue skies. Racing was over 150 yards at half yd/lb in three weight groups with veterans. Our newest club champion Another Millworth continued her blistering form to take the lightweight group for Andy and Linda, keeping her honest in second place was Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac. Two litter mates from the Quiver x Mystify Me litter took the honours in the next two groups, namely Jane's Endeavour in the middleweight group and Steve's Red Apache in the heavyweights - both running on a puppy handicap. Rob, Lucy and Matthew's Doolally ran a valiant second in the middleweights where as Tina and Colin's Dillinger was runner up in the heavyweights. Finishing off a good day for the Jennings, newly crowned Veteran Champion Shadow won the final group from Angie and Mike's litter sisters Savernake Flash of Red and Savernake Shogun. Andy and Linda's Rosie and Angie and Mike's Barley both made progress in multiple trials and it was great to welcome Sam with her charge Monty to the track who took to racing like a duck to water. Our next club meeting takes place on Sunday 31st August - all welcome.

Sunday 20th July
When arriving at the field today it was a little like a mini open with over 70 dogs on the race card and a long line of cars complete with gazebos and deck chairs lining the track. The sun did not stop shining and racing was at club handicap over a distance of 150 yards. It was good to welcome a few extra faces due to the Nationals committee meeting that took place after racing and with the local beer festival taking place in the field behind the Weyhill Fair we were entertained by live music throughout. It was pleasing to see a number of the recently cleared puppies holding their own in the racing, with Red Apache, Agile Approach and Endeavour all taking heat wins. There were first round wins for: Hannah Montana (Sc), Satin Secrets (-1), Mortons Crazy Nights (Sc), Wonterfellin Babybelle (-2), Endeavour (-1), Shooting Starlight (-1), Red Apache (-3), Agile Approach (-1), Kai Kai (-3), Duncton Spirit of the Wind (-4), Pebble Nugget (-2), Sapphires Gem (-5) and Savernake Flash of Red (Sc). Second round wins for Savernake Muntjac (-2), Savernake Shooting Times (-2), Kinda Hot (-2), Hannah Montana (Sc), Doolally (-1), Endeavour (-2), Mortons Fuller Bounce (-1), Agile Approach (-3), Kai Kai (-1), Court Jester (-1), Dearly Devoted (-2), Sapphire Queens Topaz (-6) and Savernake Flash of Red (Sc). Alongside racing there were a host of trials with puppies at different stages of their training. Congratulations to Rob and Darcia's Sonic (who they are hoping to race as Duncton Dark Knight) for passing his clearing trials in fine style. Jeff's Russ is also continuing to run well with company as is Andy and Linda's Rosie. Blue is making progress as he gets used to running with another dog and Angie and Mike's Barley went through a closed trap for the first time. The new addition to the Fitzgerald family "Frank" the show bred Greyhound puppy was an instant hit with everyone and had plenty of puppy cuddles. There is now a break for two weeks before we return to racing on Sunday 10th August. Best of luck at the Nationals to all Andover club dogs.

Sunday 6th July
Another sunny summer Sunday racing at Andover. It was a well attended meeting with over 40 dogs racing and trialling. The dogs ran off weight handicap over a distance of 150 yards at half yard/lb. The dogs were split into three weight groups and there were some cracking finals that made it hard work for the line judges. The Lightweight final saw the closest of finishes between Steve and Sue's Kinda Hush and Steve's Agile Illusion, with the former winning by the edge of her nose. In the Middleweight group Andy and Linda's Another Millworth had to work hard to make up the distance given to Steve's Red Apache who in his first race meeting put in a brilliant performance, winning both his heat and semi off a puppy allowance of 20lbs before losing by less than a dogs length in the final. Jeanette's Chermayeff was a clear winner of the Heavyweight group with Tina and Colin's Dillinger putting in a battling performance to take second place ahead of Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson in third. The Veterans saw a win from Angie's Sapphire Queens Topaz over sister Sapphires Gem in the Lightweights, with Tina and Colin's Shadow taking a comfortable win over Angie and Mike's Savernake Flash of Red in the Heavyweight Final. Congratulations to Anne and Bob's Penelope Pitstop for winning the Consolation final in fine style in her first race meeting and to Steve's Sam for passing his clearing trials without putting a foot wrong. Geoff's Russ ran through a trap for the first time today, as did Angie and Mike's Barley, whereas brother Sonic belonging to Rob and Darcia ran with 3 other dogs for the first time and is looking ready to complete his clearing trials. Our next meeting takes place on Sunday 20th July.

Sunday 18th May
In our first club meeting for over a month we ran off club handicap over a distance of 150 yards at 1 yard per mark. For once the weather was on our side and we were greeted with a bright and sunny day. Many of our club members had made the trip to Honeyhills Open, so we had a small meeting with about 30 dogs running in racing and trials. There were round one wins for Anne and Bob's Hannah Montana (-1), June & Alan's Shearevan (-2), Alan and Barbara's Mesmerizer (Sc), Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson (-3). Steve's Blackthorn Bob (Sc) and Tina and Colin's Shadow (-4), in the second round there were repeat wins for Shearevan, Mesmerizer, Shoeless Joe Jackson and Shadow and they were joined by Angie and Mike's Savernake Shooting Times (-3) and Mr Cooper (-2) It was lovely to welcome visitors Alan and Barbara plus Blue and his family who made their first visit to Andover and had their first experience of whippet racing. Blue was a natural, enjoying two trials and even going through an open trap! Steve's Jet and Jane's Tally continue to trial well in company and there were open trap runs for Alan and Barbara's Solomon and Hetty and Rob and Darcia's Sonic.

Sunday 13th April
A beautiful sunny day saw us prepare for the upcoming opens by getting in some scratch practice. Racing was over 150 yards off scratch in rough weight groups. In the next group Andy and Linda's Another Millworth went one step further by winning in fine style from Angie and Mike's duo of Savernake Shooting Times and Savernake Stepping Stones, while Sally's Jingles took fourth place in her first race meeting at Andover. In the Middleweight group it was time for one of Angie and Mike's dogs to go one step further and Savernake Sporting Gun duly obliged to take the win from Rob, Lucy and Matthew's Doolally in second, their own Savernake Bird of Prey in third and Jayne's Winterfellin Babybelle in fourth. In the Heavyweight group Rob and Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the Wind led from the traps to take the win from Colin and Tina's Dillinger in second, with Pat's Mr Trotter in third from the race winners brother Like the Wind belonging to Geoff in fourth. The distance was 150 yards at half a yard a pound. Sunday 23rd March
Four seasons in one day would be an apt description of the weather today, first there was sunshine, then snow, then more sunshine, then a shower or two, and finally more sunshine. Throughout it all, our band of merry racers and their whippets enjoyed a day of good racing. Racing was over a distance of 150 yards at half a yard per lb for the Andy Eaton Memorial Trophy. The dogs were split into two weight groups and the winning and second place dog in each weight group ran off for the trophy. Winning the lightweight group in fine style while almost a veteran was Angie's Sapphire's Gem (23lbs) who took the group from Viv's youngster Cheeky Devil running off 20lbs and Steve and Sue's Daisy in third (18lb). In the Heavyweight group it was a win for Maggie's young Nubs Shifter (26lbs) who beat Angie and Mike's Savernake Bird of Prey (24lbs) into second place. Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson came third (28lb). In the Supreme the second placed dogs decided not to run so it was a straight battle between Sapphire's Gem and Nubs Shifter, with Maggie's girl pulling through to take the victory. It was pleasing to see so many young dogs taking their place in the racing and Melissa and Paul's Ace and Special Brew handled themselves well in their first meeting. Congratulations to Jo and Steve whose dog Belle passed her clearing trials today after gliding through all aspects of training in a very short time, it will be good to see her added to the race card next week.

We are racing again on Sunday 30th March and then again on Sunday 16th April - please note that we intend to run this meeting off scratch with all dogs racing in similar weight groups to get some practice ahead of the upcoming scratch open and National Championships.

Sunday 16th March
In total contrast to the weather two weeks ago, the sun was shining when we arrived at the track and barely a cloud passed by in the sky all day. In fact it was so warm and sunny that I imagine there will be quite a few red faces across Wiltshire this evening. Racing was over 150 yards on club handicap, there were double race wins for Pat's Mr Cooper (-3), Maggie's Nubs Shifter (Sc/-1), Rob and Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (-4/-6) and Colin and Tina's Dillinger (-1/-2) and Shadow (-3). Plus single race wins for Jeff's Global Nugget (-2), Andy and Linda's Millworth's Back (-2) and Another Millworth (-3), Pat's Mr Trotter (-4), Steve and Sue's Kinda Hot (-3), Angie and Mike's Savernake Shooting Times (-2) and Savernake Muntjac (sc) and Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson (sc). Patrick and Jade's youngster Katie (Persian Kate) ran very well in her first meeting and there were plenty of young dogs and pups trialling. Steve and Jo's Belle ran really well with three dogs for the first time, she now seems to have the confidence to overtake dogs and will be entered for clearing trials next week. Sam and Jet from the Quiver x Mystify Me litter and Sonic from Evansent x Savernake Sporting Gun all enjoyed short trials and Jeff's boy to be run as Crystal Nugget and Andy and Linda's Rosie had a little puppy bounce. It was also lovely to welcome our three youngest new racers to the track in the form of John and Lorraine's Jacob, Doug and Steph's Babe and Jade and Patrick's Leela, all from the Run at Mill x Belle of the Ball litter - we wish them well in their future careers at the club. Finally, all at Andover would like to wish Angie and Mike's young girl Barley a speedy recovery after she fell and broke her leg yesterday and wish our 'raffle queen' Sue Evans a very happy birthday.

We are racing again next Sunday and this will be a weight meeting over 150 yards. Please enter with our Secretary Rob by Wednesday.

Sunday 2nd March
The drizzle and rainy outlook didn't deter the excitement of another race day at Andover. Racing was in three weight groups over a distance of 150 yards at 1/2yd/lb. The Casaloma Fleet Trophy was run by the lightweights and in a tight finish Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac (20lbs) came from behind to beat Viv's youngster Cheeky Devil (19lbs) into a very close second place. Steve and Sue's Kinda Hot (20lbs) and Angie's Diamond Star (18lbs) took the final two places. The middleweights ran for the Beetle Trophy and it was the second week in a row that the Savernake's took two group wins with Savernake Bird of Prey (24lbs) winning a blanket finish ahead of Andy and Linda's Another Millworth (22lbs) and her two kennelmates Savernake Stepping Stones (22lbs) and Savernake Shooting Times (22lbs). In the heavyweight group the rain gremlins got into the lure machine and the final had to be run three times due to the dogs catching the lure before Rob and Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (30lbs) took the win from John and Lorraine's Backchat (26lbs) in second. Colin and Tina's Dillinger (28lbs) took third place ahead of Pat's Mr Cooper (26lbs) in fourth. Unfortunately there were only one lightweight and one heavyweight runner in each of the Veteran groups so there were solo runs for Jeff's Pebble Nugget and Colin and Tina's Shadow. Congratulations to Sara's Harvey - now running as Harvey Moon for winning the consolation final in his first race meeting. There were plenty of trials both before and after racing and it was pleasing to see Steve and Jo's Belle running well with company for the first time, Margaret's Chester continued to make good progress and a whole host of young pups including brothers Jet and Tally belonging to Steve and Jane are enjoying their first runs at the track. Jade and Patrick's Katie completed half of her clearing trials and should be all good to go with another run next time. We are racing again on Sunday 16th March and this will be a graded meeting run to club handicap.

Sunday 23rd February
For the second week running an entry of over 60 dogs meant a busy race day at the track. Although the wind was blowing a gale, the drizzle disappeared and we were left with an overcast but mainly dry day. Racing was over a distance of 150 yards at half a lb/yard in three weight groups and two veteran groups. Winning the Lightweight Ashfield Challenge Shield was Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac (20) ahead of Steve and Sue's Kinda Hot (20) in second with Savernake Shooting Times (22) in third and Viv's Cheeky Devil (P19) in fourth. Making it a double for the Sawyer's  Savernake Sporting Gun (24) returned to the track after having a litter of puppies to take the middleweight Ralph Casson Memorial Trophy. In second place in this all 24lb final was litter sister Hurricane Fly belonging to Daphne, with Jayne's Winterfellin Babybelle in third and Savernake Bird of Prey in fourth. The heavyweight group running for the Dail Shield saw a win for Jeanette's Chermayeff (32) ahead of Lesley's Xchange (30) and Darcia and Rob's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (30) in third. Steve's Blackthorn Bob (28) took fourth place. The veteran groups saw wins for Jeff's Pebble Nugget and Tina and Colin's Shadow. We hope that your track is soon dried up and fit to race on but in the meantime it is great to have you join us. There were a whole host of young dogs and pups trialling, with congratulations to Sara's Harvey who passed his clearing trials today. Steve and Sue want to thank everyone for the donations of prizes for the well supported raffle. We will be running again next week on the 2nd March, all entries to Rob by this Wednesday.

Sunday 16th February
On a bright sunny Sunday morning we returned to racing for the start of the 2014 season. The rows of cars on arrival made it seem more like an open than a club race meeting, but with the recent severe weather meaning a lack of racing opportunities across the country we were pleased to welcome members from both near and far. About 70 dogs joined us for the day and most went up in multiple trials or solo's. It was our first meeting using our new sand finish and I am pleased to report that there did not seem to be any teething problems, most dogs seemed to plough straight into the sand with no hesitation and a quick brush down after the run meant that the dogs were good to go. It was particularly pleasing to welcome so many new racers to the track, a warm welcome to Jane and Pat with Elvis, Solo, Daisy, Tia, Ellie and Teasel, to Jo and Steve with Belle and to Margaret with Chester, there were also a few others whose names I didn't catch - we hope you enjoyed your day and will return to the club soon. It was also good to see Patrick and Jade who brought Katie along for her second meeting after joining us for the first time back in November. Plus there were a whole host of young pups that came along to get used to the atmosphere, meet lots of other whippets and start their journeys into the world of whippet racing. Next Sunday (23rd February) we will hold our first race meeting with dogs running off weights, please enter with Secretary Rob by Wednesday.
