Sunday 13th October
On a very wet and overcast morning a hardy bunch of souls braved the elements to go club racing today. Racing was over 150 yards at club handicap (1 mark = 1 yard) and was competed over two rounds. With lots of young puppies in the racing and even more trialing it was a good opportunity to see how the youngsters were progressing. Round one winners were Steve's Agile Illusion (-1) (Fatal Attraction x Pop Star) who is continuing to run well since winning his way out of the maiden at our open in September, Angie and Mike's Savernake (Sc) (Evansent x Savernake Boomerang), Darcia and Rob's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (-6) (Fly the Wind x Savernake Shogun) who was running in his first club meeting since coming back from injury and Pat's Mr Cooper (Sc) (Elvire x Stripey Tara). The dogs were changed for the second round but there were repeat wins for Savernake Muntjac, Duncton Spirit of the Wind and Mr Cooper, with Savernake Shooting Times (Sc) (Fly the Wind x Savernake Shogun) winning the other race. Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson (Run at Mill x Femme Fatale) made a good account of himself with two second places in his first race meeting and Angie and Mike's Savernake Shooting Star and Savernake Doormouse and John and Lorraine's Backchat (all from the Devilish Ways x Savernake Shogun litter) continue to gain more experience against tough competition.
Before and after the racing there were multiple trials for Viv's Persie, Sue & Steve's Daisy (both out of the Devil's Double x Kinda Cheeky litter) and Pat's Rodney - all of which look ready to clear now. Sara's Harvey also had two good solo runs. Our next club meeting will take place on Sunday 27th October.

Sunday 8th September
A relaxed Sunday morning meeting saw a small gathering of racers as others were running at the Independent open.  We were fairly lucky with the weather, only enduring one fairly short shower, but even though the sun shone for most of the day there was a definite autumnal feeling in the air. The racing was split into two weight groups over a distance of 150 yards at half yd/lb. There were also a good number of trials. Winning the Carmen Shield for lightweights was Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac (20lb) who reversed the table on Andy and Linda's Millworth Back (20lb) who had beaten her in the heat. The Ashfield Challenge Shield (heavyweights) was won by Rob, Lucy and Mathew's Doolally (26lb) from Tina and Colin's Dillinger (28lb) in second place. Once again, Angie and Mike's Savernake Boomerang was the only veteran runner.

The heavyweight group - running for the Dail Shield - was won by Ray and Gaye's Wilsdon Starr from Sheila's Flash in the Pan, with Doug and Steph's Herbie Hood in third. Sunday 11th August
The sun shone for a nice relaxing meeting today with only a few races but many dogs and puppies trialing. It was nice to see a few different faces and it was good to have Ann and Bob, Jane, Roy, Nev and Kath and Steve with us at the track as well as Pat who had once again made the 3 and half hour journey up from Devon to join us. Racing was in two groups over 150 yards at half a yard a lb, once again we are using our second track to allow the main track to be prepared for our upcoming open in September and to host the 4th NPWRA National Championships later the same month. Winning the Lightweight group in fine style was Angie and Mike's Savernake Shooting Times (22lbs) just a short distance ahead of Jayne's Winterfellin Babybelle off 24lbs. The Heavyweight group was won by Pat's Mr Cooper (26lbs) who took the win from Rob and Darcia's Duncton Two Tone (25lbs) in second. Once again there were mixed trials for Angie and Mike's Magic and Thimble and Steve's Ben went well in company as did Roy's Dolly, plus a whole host of young pups who trialed well in solo's. After a break due to opens and the postponement of last week's meeting due to concerns over the hard ground it was good to be back club racing this week. There were heat wins for Savernake Shooting Times (x2), Savernake Bird of Prey (x2), Doolally, Mr Cooper, Savernake Boomerang (x2), Savernake Stepping Stones and Duncton Spirit of the Wind. John and Lorraine's Isaac was on the race card for the first time, Doug and Steph's Joe had a very pleasing first clearing trial and Angie and Mike's Magic and Thimble were coming along nicely in mixed trials.

Sunday 30th June
Glorious bright sunshine with a relaxed atmosphere and a few new faces at the track today. In the two weeks since the last meeting, Doug had made some final adjustments to the new traps which were looking in tiptop condition ready for the rest of the season including our open in September and the fourth National Championships being held at the track later on in the year. Racing was once again over a distance of 150 yards at half a yd/lb. With such lovely surrounding scenery there is always something to look at during the breaks between the racing, today we not only enjoyed seeing the moth but were welcomed by the sound of Skylarks in the skies above as well as Kestrels and a Red kite.

Sunday 16th June
Today we had club racing off weights over a distance of 150 yards at 1/2yd/lb in two weight groups. The big news was that our new traps had finally arrived and were ready to be used. All five traps looked in pristine condition thanks to Dougie who had been working hard with the finishing touches: sorting the electrics, ensuring that all surfaces were smooth and kitting them out with new carpet on the floor. Before we knew it the first trialing dogs were in - and out of the traps and we were away. The lightweight group  saw a 1-2 for Andy and Linda with Another Millworth (22lbs) taking the win from kennelmate Millworth's Back running off 20lbs. Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac (20lbs) took third ahead of Doug and Steph's Evan Elp Us (20lbs). In the heavyweight group Angie & Mike's Savernake Sporting Gun (24lbs) won from the front with a three yard start over big brother Duncton Spirit of the Wind running off 30lbs. He made up a lot of ground to take second ahead of Savernake Bird of Prey (24lbs) and Tina and Colin's Dillinger (28lbs) in fourth. In the veterans Angie & Mike's Savernake Boomerang (20lbs) was an easy winner ahead of Duncton Nemesis who was running in his first race as a veteran. John & Lorraine's Isaac continued to trial well and there was mixed trials for Colin and Tina's Regan and Angie & Mike's Magic and Thimble.

Summer Open Sunday 2nd June - kindly sponsored by Red Mills
Many thanks to everyone that supported our summer open, for once the name lived up to its billing as we were met with a glorious day of sunshine at just about the right temperature to ensure good racing with the dogs not getting too hot. A big thank you to everyone that helped out both in preparation for the open and on the day. Dougie had done a brilliant job on the track to get it in near perfect condition after the difficult weather conditions over the last few months, and we were inundated with offers of help from not only our own members but from friends travelling from clubs all around the country to race with us. The racing was over a distance of 180 yards at 3/4yd/lb for Maiden and Elite groups and 150 yards at 1/2yd/lb plus a yd/yr for Veterans. It was great to have so many runners in the Supreme finals, congratulations to our Supreme winners: Another Millworth owned by Andy Alford and Linda Williams, and RCh Shearevan and RCh Evansent owned by June and Alan Foster.

Sunday 12th May
After a three week break it was great to get back to club racing and the ground was looking a lot greener than it had previously with new growth on both race tracks. Dougie had just mowed the grass and despite the ground being hard underfoot there was a nice covering of grass on the finish. Racing was on club handicap over a distance of 150 yards with each mark being one yard. Round one winners: Tula (-1), Kinda Busy (Sc), Savernake Sporting Gun (-4), Winterfellin Babybelle (Sc), Savernake Boomerang (Sc). Round two winners: Kinda Busy (-1), Savernake Muntjac (-1), Herbie Hood (-4), Savernake Sporting Gun (-1) and Savernake Boomerang (Sc). It was lovely to see a few new faces and there were many dogs trialling. Our next meeting is our Summertime Open taking place on Sunday 2nd June, the closing date is Wednesday 22nd May.

In the veteran's June & Alan's Evansent (26lbs) (6) beat kennelmate Maximum Spirit (21lbs) (8) to win the final. For the first time this year the temperature was up in double figures as we gathered for our weekly race meet. A small field saw the racing divided into two weight groups and one veteran group running over a distance of 150 yards at half yd/lb. Winning the heavyweight group in fine style just a week after her win at the National Championships was Rob, Lucy & Matthew's Doolally (26lbs), while Angie and Mike's Savernake Muntjac (21lbs) took the Lightweight group ahead of Sue and Steve's Tula (21lbs) and June & Alan's Evansent took the Veterans (6) (26lbs) infront of Angie and Mike's Savernake Boomerang (7) (20lbs). The puppies from the Devilish Ways x Savernake Shogun litter continued to make good progress with Thimble, Magic and Isaac all running up with another dog and Milo solo-ing. Sunday 24th March
On a bitterly cold day, a good turn out of racers arrived for our last meeting before the open season begins. Racing was over 150 yards at 1/2yd/lb - we are currently limited to 150 yards as this is the maximum distance on our second track as our main track (capable of longer distances) is being saved for the upcoming NPWRA National Championships in two weeks time. The lightweight group saw a one-two for Angie Parker, with Sapphire Queens Topaz (21lbs) beating kennel-mate Diamond Star (18lbs). In the middleweight final, Angie & Mike's Savernake Sporting Gun (24lbs) came from the back to beat Sapphire Gem (23lbs) and in the heavyweight final, Rob & Lucy's Doolally (26lbs) kept her lead to win ahead of Rob & Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (31lbs). Once again, youngsters Isaac, Milo and Ben continued to make good progress in their trials.

Sunday 17th March
A very wet couple of days prior to this meeting saw the field soggy underfoot on arrival, but the track was raceable and we were soon underway. It was lovely to welcome guests Carol & Dave Brown and Andrew & Alison Ingley & family and their dogs and to catch up with some other Andover regulars who made their first visit to the track this year. Racing was over 150 yards at club handicap with each mark being one yard. Unfortunately the weather got worse as the morning went on and the rain/sleet/snow finally beat us after the first round of racing was completed, by which time most of us were soaked through. Sunday 10th March
The cold weather was certainly back in force for our race meeting today; so it was lots of layers, gloves and woolly hats at the ready as we gathered to start the trials. Once again the pups from the Devilish Ways x Savernake Shogun litter continued to make good progress and it was pleasing to see Doug and Steph's Tiger not putting a foot wrong when running in multiple trials with three other dogs. The racing was over 150 yards in three groups at 1/2yd/lb. Winning the lightweight group was Angie Parker's Sapphire's Queen Topaz (21), the middleweight group was won by Angie & Mike's Savernake Shooting Times (22lbs) and Rob & Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the Wind (31lbs) took the Heavyweight group. Angie & Mike's Savernake Boomerang won the Veteran group.

Sunday 3rd March
First proper race meeting of the season and a good turnout with plenty of new people and their dogs joining us for the first time despite the cold start to the day that saw frost on the ground. Racing was over a distance of 150 yards at half a yard per lb in three weight groups. Some close finishes saw wins for Andy & Linda's Millworth Back (20lb), Angie & Mike's Savernake Stepping Stones (22lbs) and Doug & Steph's Herbie Hood (27lbs). Savernake Boomerang was the lone veteran running off 22lbs. There were many more trials than races, it was pleasing to see the pups from the Blue & White Dynamite x Geisha Girl litter running well, with both Gaye's Ben and Doug & Steph's Tiger trialing with another dog. Another litter who have just taken to the track enjoyed an encouraging day with first trials for Angie & Mike's Thimble & Magic and Chris & Sarah's Milo and good second trials for John & Lorraine's Issac, all from the Devlish Ways x Savernake Shogun litter. Steve's Lola, Jane's Quest and Richard's Fidget also trialled along with newcomers Gem and Minka. At the end of the day a quick committee meeting resulted in the decision to hold race meetings in a cycle of two weight meetings followed by a meeting off club handicap and dates were decided for the rest of the season. The club fixtures page will be updated shortly.

Sunday 17th Feb
After what has seemed like a very long winter it was back to the track and on with some racing action today. The sun shone gloriously throughout the morning and whippets and owners alike seemed full of the joys of spring. It was our first run out on the new secondary track and all went well, the dogs ran a distance just short of 150 yards and there were no issues. It was a day of trials and I dont think I have ever heard so much noise down by the track with many dogs literally howling and barking with sheer exuberance as they waited for their opportunity and then started chasing after the lure. The more experienced dogs were put into twos and threes to take to the track while many younger dogs enjoyed their first experience of racing. We welcomed Richard and his family with Fidget who at 13 months took to trialling like a duck to water, John & Lorraine gave Isaac his first half way run and he also took it in his stride. After happily running the full length of the track young Fly took her first run through an open track and both Steph & Doug's Tiger and Steve's Lola had successful runs with one other dog. Jayne's friend Sapphira brought her girls to the track for the first time and with a coursing background they easily adjusted to running a straight track. Sara's young charge Harvey and littermate Persie belonging to Viv both turned heads and all in all a very enjoyable day was had by everyone. Our next meeting will take place on Sunday 3rd March. Please book in with Rob as this will be our first scheduled meeting running for trophies.
