Sunday 4th December: Christmas Club Racing

We held our final club meeting of 2016 on Sunday. It was a very frosty and cold start to the day despite the sunshine so we held back with the racing and started with some nibbles and the Christmas Raffle. Steve welcomed us all with a cup of warm mulled wine and before long there was much merriment and banter. Wutt called the raffle complete with Christmas shirt and sun glasses and amongst both dogs and their owners there was a good selection of festive jumpers and outfits. With the ground finally thawed out we could begin the trials at about lunch time. Despite a few owners deciding not to run their dogs there was still a fairly full programme of 15 races. Winning the heavyweight group once again was Jeanette's Chermayeff from Doug and Steph's Glory Road in second. The middleweight group saw a win for Angie and Mike's Savernake Top Gun who reversed the result from the heat with Rob and Darcia's Duncton Dark Duke taking the runners up spot. In the lightweights there was a win for Dave and Sue's Looney Tunes who ran a good race against Steve's Apache Gold. In her first outing as a veteran there was a win for Angie and Mike's Savernake Sporting Gun in the Veteran group - making this two wins out of two for the Savernake mother and daughter pairing. For the second week running the Racers group was won by Terry's My Best Buddy. It was lovely to see some of our regular members join us for the final race meeting of the year despite having no runners to race. We finished with more trials, congratulations to Steve's Marley who successfully passed his clearing trials and will run as Wild Apache next season. We look forward to seeing everyone for our Christmas meal on Sunday 18th December at the Weyhill Fair.

Sunday 27th November: Club Racing

After having to postpone the meeting last weekend, it was great to arrive at the track with the weather dry - if not rather chilly with quite a brisk wind. Despite it being so late in the season we had a good entry with 50 dogs on the card mixed between those in racing and those having trials. Today was a graded meeting with dogs running off club handicap at 1/2 yard per mark and it brought about a few blanket finishes in the finals which meant that the line judges had to be on top form. Congratulations to Jeanette's Chermayeff (-8) who defied the handicapper once again by coming from the back to win the Heavyweight group, although he had to work hard for the win, just beating Sue's Winterfellin Vanilla Sky (-5) by a short head. In the Middleweight group there was a win for Darcia and Rob's Duncton Dark Duke (sc) from Angie and Mike's Savernake Shooting Star (-1) in second. The Lightweight group saw a close finish between Dave and Sue's Looney Tunes (-8) who took the win from Steve's Apache Gold (-10). The Veteran final was won by Pat's Mr Cooper and there was a blanket finish in the Racers group where Terry's My Best Buddy (sc) held the lead to take the win from Pat's Mr Trotter (-6). Doug and Steph's Tilda successfully passed her clearing trials, we wish her every success in her racing career, and a few others are not far from following suit with great multiple trials for Steve's Marley and Steve and Wutt's Jack also taking place. It was also lovely to see Steve & Sue's Gina and Lynne & Alastair's Chance going well in their first official trials today. It is our Christmas meeting next Sunday (4th December). We do hope that many of you will come along and join us. Christmas jumpers and hats optional for both humans and whippets! & don't forget to bring along a plate of food and a prize for our Christmas raffle.

Sunday 6th November: Club Racing

On the coldest day of the year so far it was scarves and hats all round as we battled against a bitter breeze that swept across the field. Thankfully the sun was at least shining so as soon as you got moving you started to warm up. A huge thanks to Andy on the lure, Rob on the bike, Steve on the traps and anyone else who helped out in any way, we really could not keep the club running if it were not for you. Despite some club dogs now resting for the winter there was still a full programme of 17 races plus quite a few trials. Racing was over 150 yards at 1/2 yd/lb for main and veteran groups with the Racers running off of club handicap. The Lightweight group was once again won by Sam and Pete's Whitby Whirl who is finishing the season in fine style and she had to work hard to shield off a sustained run from Steve's Apache Gold who has not been beaten at club in a long time. The Middleweight group saw a fantastic trap and run from Lesley's youngster Xtreme running in only his second meeting off a puppy handicap of -3lbs. Sara's Harvest Moon took second place in a well contested final. The Heavyweight group saw another win for Jeanette's awesome Chermayeff who after missing his break worked hard to pass the early leader to take the win and there were smiles all round as Tina and Colin's Demolition Man took the runners up spot after re-qualifying at the last meeting. Pat's Mr Cooper was a strong winner in the veteran group with Sara's Star of Twilight having to settle for second place. Last but not least, the Racers group saw Trevor's Ebony Express blitz from the traps to take the win off a handicap of -4, with Sam and Pete's Whitby Jet in second on a -3. The pups from the Agile Illusion x Savernake Top Gun litter are now starting to make real progress with Angie and Mike's Forest & Rain, Steve's Jack and Tina & Colin's Teddy all going well, as was Steve's Marley who ran well with two dogs, Alan and June's Pip and Lynne and Alastair's Harvey and Squiffy. Angie's two girls Bella and Tansy enjoyed some half way trials and there were puppy bounces for some of the pups from the Endeavour x Kinda Hush litter. It was also pleasing to see Terry's Luna looking more determined in her trials & I am sure that it wont be long before she joins the race programme. A quick reminder that full payment for the Christmas Meal is now due and should be made to Steve by Sunday 4th December at the latest along with your choice of menu. Our next club meeting will take place on Sunday 20th November.

Sunday 23rd October: Club Racing

Today was another well attended meeting with plenty of racing and trials. The weather was kind and after a gloomy start the sun came out around midday and helped take away the worst of a cold breeze. Racing was over 150 yards at 1/2yd/lb in five weight groups plus veterans and Racers. Pete and Sam had a very good day with a double - Whitby Whirl winning the lightweight group ahead of Andy's Sidari Tegan and Whitby Jet won the Racers group ahead of Trevor's Ebony Express. The Lower middleweight group saw Steve's Apache Gold take the win from Angela's Sapphire Ruby Queen and the Upper Middleweight group was won by Doug and Steph's Glory Road from Lesley's pup Xtreme who was running in his first race meeting. Tina and Colin had a 1-2 in the Heavyweight group with That's My Boy taking the win from Dillinger in second place. In the Veterans unfortunately we only had one runner so there was a solo run and win for Sara's Star of Twilight. There were plenty of dogs doing trials and there was a successful clearing trial for Jeanette's Sky - who is to run as Skylon, we wish him every success in his future racing career. We also welcomed Montgomery's family to their first race meeting and look forward to seeing them all again. Thanks to everyone who helped out by doing jobs today including Jeff who kindly run the raffle. Our next meeting will take place on Sunday the 6th November.

Sunday 9th October: Club Racing

Once again we were blessed with another sunny Sunday for our latest club meeting. It is getting towards the end of the year and with members starting to rest their dogs the race card was fairly quiet with just 12 races plus trials. With a few of our regular members away it was all hands on deck to cover the jobs but with a very relaxed atmosphere we were still completed in plenty of time to visit the Charity fun day that was taking place next door in the Weyhill Fair pub. Racing was over 150 yards at half a yard/lb. There were first round wins for Rob and Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the North, Steve's Apache Gold, Angie and Mike's Savernake Tawny Owl, Trevor's Ebony Express, Pat's Mr Cooper and Dave and Sue's Looney Tunes. The second round was very similar with second wins for Duncton Spirit of the North, Apache Gold, Ebony Express, Mr Cooper and Looney Tunes, with only Sara's Harvest Moon reversing his run in his heat to take first place this time. In the trials Angie and Mike's Forest and Rain are improving and are now coming out of the traps with company, Doug and Steph's Tilda and litter Brother Marley belonging to Steve both ran with another dog over a short distance and did well and Alastair and Lynne's Harvey and Squiffy are now chasing well coming through an open trap. We now move over to a fortnightly programme with our next club meeting taking place in two weeks time on Sunday the 23rd October. Best of luck to all of our club members that are running at the North West Championships next weekend.

Sunday 2nd October: Club Racing

We had blue skies and sunshine all day for our first meeting of October. With the ground in brilliant condition following a wet Saturday we ran on our open track over a distance of 165 yards with the dogs graded off club handicap in two rounds of racing. It was lovely to have Roy and Sue McDine and members of Trowbridge Camera Club along as special guests for the meeting and they have already shared some of their fantastic photos of our whippets running (see our Facebook page). There were Round one wins for Whitby Whirl, Duncton Spirit of the North, Sidari Tegan, Nac Mac Feegle, Apache Gold, Savernake Top Gun, Mr Cooper, Ebony Express, Mr Trotter and Shoeless Joe Jackson and Second Round wins for Sidari Tegan, Duncton Spirit of the North, Looney Tunes, Apache Gold, Savernake Top Gun, Whitby Whirl, Ebony Express, My Best Buddy, Duncton Dark Duke and Mr Cooper. Congratulations to Mike and Angie's Savernake Tawny Owl (Endeavour x Savernake Muntjac) who was running in her first race meeting today and came away with a third and second place from her two runs. Once again there were a whole plethora of dogs and pups trialling, many of which have shown real progression over the last two weeks. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to club next Sunday for another Club Meeting.

Sunday 25th September: Club Racing

In our first meeting since our open on the 11th September it was great to get back to some club racing. It was another sunny autumnal day and the track was in fantastic condition after some overnight rain. Despite there only being a fairly small race card we were rewarded with some close racing and there was plenty of banter and laughs as everyone pulled together to cover all the jobs and help each other out with trapping dogs and catching. Racing was over 150 yards at half yard/lb and was split into 4 weight groups plus Veterans and Racers. We started with the Upper Middleweight group which was won by Doug and Steph's Shoeless Joe Jackson who got a fantastic trap in the final after being beaten in his heat by Rob and Darcia's youngster Duncton Fury. Angie and Mike's Savernake Top Gun was a close second in what was a blanket finish with all four dogs within a yard of each other going across the line. Next up was the Heavyweight group which saw Jeanette's Chermayeff win from Doug and Steph's Glory Road who put up a good fight and only got passed in the last third of the track. The Light weight group saw Savernake Sparrowhawk and Sidari Tegan take heat wins and it was Andy's Sidari Tegan which went on to win the group after a flying trap with Pete and Sam's Whitby Whirl finishing strongly in second. The Lower Middleweights saw two sisters Looney Tunes and Jas It Up competing for the win. Caroline and Peter's Jas It Up took the heat win but Dave and Sue's Looney Tunes turned the tide on her sister to take the win in the final. Steph and Doug's Honey Child won the other heat and took third place. The Racers group saw heat wins for Ebony Express and Mr Trotter and they finished first and second in the final with Trevor's Ebony Express pulling away to win in style from Pat's Mr Trotter who looked good after returning to the track from an injury. Unfortunately our only Veteran was Pat's Mr Cooper who won his final before having a run up with the Lightweight Consolation finalist in the second round. It was lovely to see Patrick and Jade's Persian Prince running in his first competitive club meeting and getting a second place in his heat. We finished the day with a number of trials. Well done to Lynne's Squiffy who returned to the track with added determination after a months break and looked good in his trials and also to the pups from the Agile Illusion x Savernake Top Gun litter who were all looking keen and running well. We are racing again next Sunday the 2nd October, this will be a graded meeting off club handicap, enteries to Darcia by 9pm on wednesday.

Please also note that plans are being put in place for our Christmas meal, this will take place at the Weyhill Fair on Sunday 18th December at 12.30. The price for a 3 course meal is £18. A deposit of £10 is required to secure your place. The full menu will be added on here and on our facebook page in due course. All welcome!

Sunday 14th August: Club Racing

Following a successful day for many of our club dogs at the 4th NPWRA National Championships held last Sunday it was back to club racing today. With a hot day forecast we started a little earlier than usual and it was all hands on deck to get the racing underway. Dogs ran in three weight groups plus Veterans and Racers, the distance was 150 yards at a handicap of half yard/lb. Once again their were some competitive races with a few surprises along the way. The Lightweight group saw a close battle between Pete and Sam's Whitby Whirl and Andy's Sidari Tegan, the former taking the win after the dogs were running side by side for most of the way up the track. The Middleweight group saw Rob and Darcia's two puppies running in their first race meeting on a very favourable puppy handicap and once again their was nothing between them with Duncton Fury (Endeavour x Savernake Muntjac) winning by a neck from kennel mate Duncton Dark Duke (Duncton Dark Knight x Silkspun Blackbird). Jeanette's Chermayeff was a more comfortable winner in the Heavyweight group from another newcomer, Jeff and Pat's Artful Dodger (Run At Mill x Mystify Me) who was also competing in his first club meeting after clearing last time out. The Racers group saw Pete and Sam do the double with Whitby Jet taking the win from Trevor's Ebony Express in second and with only one Veteran on the race card there was a win for Sara's Star Of Twilight. Once again it was pleasing to see so many young dogs making good progress in their trials and we had three more successful clearing trials. Congratulations to Angie and Mike with Otter - to run as Savernake Tawny Owl and Lesley with brother Dio - to run as Xtreme, both out of the litter between Endeavour and Savernake Muntjac and litter mates to today's middleweight group winner Duncton Fury, to Jade and Patrick with Fergus - to run as Persian Prince and to Lynne and Alistair with Pharelle - to run as Feeling Frosty. We wish you all well in your future racing careers. Sunday 24th July: Club Racing

For the second week in a row we held an extra club meeting for those members not out competing on the open circuit. Today's meeting was smaller in numbers due to some of our members attending the North West Championships, but we still had some good racing and a few close finishes.Well done to all the finals winners; Whitby Whirl, Apache Gold, Glory Road, Agile Dondodat, Whitby Jet and Star of Twilight.

Sunday 26th June: Club Racing

Today we held a scratch meeting to get some practice in ahead of the Nationals next weekend. Racing was over 175 yards and off scratch in rough weight groups over two rounds. Best of luck to all our Andover dogs competing in the NPWRA Third National Championships being hosted here at Andover next sunday.

Sunday 5th June: Club Racing

A hot hot hot day at the club today! What started out as a small meeting as many of our usual racers were resting their dogs after a few hectic weeks of open racing ended up being quite a big club meeting with our Racers group going from strength to strength and a whole host of dogs trialling, many of which being newbies to the club and whippet racing. Racing was over 150 yards at half a yard a lb in three groups. The lightweight group saw a win for Steve's youngster Apache Gold who is just going from strength to strength as she gains confidence and gets more experience, he made it a double with Red Apache also winning the Middleweight group, there were runners up spots for Mike and Angie's Savernake Sparrowhawk and Savernake Top Gun respectively. The Racers group saw another win for Sam and Pete's Whitby Jet who had his work cut out picking up the smaller dogs infront of him, another dog doing it the hard way from the back was Pat's Mr Trotter who just got up to take second place. There were too many trials to mention all the dogs individually but a big congratulations to Tina and Colin's Bill who passed his clearing trials today. We also welcomed Maisey, Squiffy, Harvey, Pharelle, Batman and Anna with their owners today. Our next club meeting is on Sunday 26th June. A polite reminder to all racers attending that all dogs should remain on leads when not on the track and to ensure that there is someone at the finish to pick up your dogs. Many thanks!

Sunday 8th May: Club Racing and BBQ

Another fantastic day at club today with over 60 dogs racing and trialling and nothing but non-stop sunshine throughout, in fact we were all very grateful for the cooling breeze that took the edge off the heat. Racing was over 150 yards at 1/2 yard a lb in 3 weight groups and veterans along with 3 races over 2 rounds in the Racers group. Congratulations to David and Sue's  Looney Tunes who went unbeaten all day on the way to winning the Lightweight group from Andy's Sidari Tegan in second place, in the Middleweight group Rob and Darcia's Duncton Spirit of the North was also unbeaten ahead of Doug and Steph's Glory Road and making it a double for them, Duncton Spirit of the Wind was also a winner in the Heavyweight group from Steve and Wutt's Agile Dondodat in second. We were short of veterans today with Phyll's Woodleigh Amber being a lone runner in the Lightweight Veteran group and Pat's Mr Cooper winning the Heavyweight Veteran group in the same manner. The Racers group was run over two rounds to allow some clearance trials to take place and saw multiple wins for Trev's Ebony Express and Pete and Sam's Whitby Jet with Terry's My Best Buddy and Dan's Sporting Chance taking it in turns to win the other heat. Congratulations to Stephen's Stuey and Ruby who both successfully passed their clearing trials. There were a whole host of dogs trialling, with Colin and Tina's Bill and Ben running well in blinkers, Jade and Patrick's Fergus looking good and the younger batch of pups trialling well; Rob and Darcia's Manny ran with another dog for the first time and kennel mate Sid also went well with company as did his sister Otter owned by Angie and Mike. Steve and Wutt's Jack is running like a professional and litter sisters Rain and Forest get better with every run, it was also lovely to see Doug and Steph's latest addition Tilda out and about for puppy cuddles. We also welcomed Dan with Reggie and Duke and Macca with Bleau to the club. After racing we all enjoyed a BBQ ably cooked by our two top Chefs Wutt and Pete. See photos below. Sunday 1st May: Trials Meeting & news from the Northern Open

Great day at the Northern for our Andover members, with lots of happy faces making their way back down the long drive on the M6. In the 20-22lb group it was a 1-2 with Caroline and Peter's Jas It Up taking the win from Andy and Linda's Another Millworth and Steve and Wutt's Ben took a third place in the Consolation final. In the 23-25lb group it was another 1-2 with Jane's Endeavour taking the win from Sarah and Steve's Up For It who surprised his owners by running so well over a longer distance - he is only a 150 dog we were told at the start of the day! Steve's Apache Gold took the win in the consolation final. In the 26-28lb group there was a second place for Steve's Red Apache and Darcia and Rob's Duncton Spirit of the North won the consolation final with Dan's Sporting Chance in third place. In the 29-32lb group it was a 1-2-3 with Darcia and Rob's Duncton Dark Knight winning from Steve and Wutt's Agile Approach in second and Lorraine and John's Jungle Face in third. Many thanks to all at the Northern for a lovely day and the normal warm welcome. At club a good day of trials took place. I hear that Tina and Colin's youngsters had some good runs. Angela and Mike's Otter went well running with company for the first time and we welcomed Steve and Kylie with their dog Alfie. We are trialling this weds from 5pm. All welcome. Club racing next Sunday - please book in by 9pm on wednesday.

Sunday 17th April: Club Meeting

Another Sunday and another great day at club, this week we did some more scratch practice in rough weight groups ahead of the Nationals next weekend. With a card of 34 races and another 15 dogs trialling it was almost like a mini open and we were grateful for some sunshine and a few less issues with the traps. Talking of the traps, Doug and Pete had been busy all week swapping over from a solenoid system to electromagnets as the starting mechanism and despite a few early teething problems it was great to have a full meeting with no reruns. Many thanks to them both for all of their hard work. Away from the track we also want to say a big thanks to Patrick, Andy, John and Doug for spending their Saturday morning sorting the entrance to the field, gone is the mud and we now have a hardcore surface to drive in on (but please take care and try to stick to the path when entering and exiting the field). The racing itself was over 150 yards and was mainly in 2lb weight groups and this led to some close and exciting racing. It was lovely to have Dan and Stephen join us from Wales once again and their dogs Diva (Sporting Chance), Jet (Sporting Dream) and Skye (Skye's The Limit) all successfully passed their clearing trials which also doubled up as races. Stephen also brought along Stuey who had a good couple of trials and we welcomed Terry with Buddy who also went well when put into the second round of racing and Luna. Margaret and Mark's Foxy Feeling (Chester) ran in his first club meeting within the Racers group and his trapping is improving all of the time, his best result being a second place in Race 32. Round 1 winners were Millworth's Back, Jas It Up, Nac Mac Feegle, Bring It Back, Red Apache, Duncton Spirit of the Wind, Chermayeff, Kinda Hush, Apache Gold, Looney Tunes, Agile Approach, Duncton Dark Knight, Kinda Busy, Ebony Express and Mr Cooper. There were second round wins for Millworth's Back, Apache Gold, Another Millworth, Up For It, Red Apache, Duncton Spirit of the Wind, Chermayeff, Kinda Hush, Jas It U, Looney Tunes, Glory Road, Duncton Dark Knight, Kinda Busy, Ebony Express and Mr Cooper. After racing we all stopped and managed to get everyone together for a club photo before we went on to hold more trials for the dogs coming back from injury and puppies. Good luck to all of our club members who are competing at the First NPWRA National Championships next weekend. As many of our regulars are going to the Northern Open the following weekend (1st May) we are going to hold a trials meeting for anyone who wants to come along, no need to enter, just turn up and we will return to club racing on Sunday 8th May.

Sunday 10th April: Club Trophy Meeting

Today we held our first trophy meeting of the year, we had a good entry of about 60 dogs including lots of puppies and young dogs for trials and we welcomed some new members and their dogs to the club. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of Doug and the team the gremlins had gotten into the traps once again which did affect a number of races including some of the finals, but it didnt stop there from being some brilliant racing and some very close races right from the heats through to the finals. A healthy Lightweight group of 15 dogs saw Caroline and Peter's fantastic young dog Jas It Up unbeaten in heat, semi and final, looking at that you may think that she had it easy but both the semi and final were keenly contested with Sam and Pete's Whitby Whirl who is now trapping well and racing determindly on what was her return to the track after her season. The Middleweight group was won by Steve's Red Apache from Doug and Steph's Glory Road in second place. The owners in the Heavyweight group agreed on a dead heat for all four dogs in the final so this was shared between Agile Approach, Duncton Dark Knight, Agile Dondodat and Duncton Spirit of the Wind after a few traps problems. The Racers group was dominated once again by Trevor's Ebony Express who came from the back to win both his heat and final despite being handicapped back. Caroline and Peter's Day Dreamer was a valiant runner up. Thanks to the owners who allowed our newcomers Diva and Skye to run with them in the final and after racing. The Veteran group was won by Angie and Mike's Savernake Stepping Stones who took the win from Phyl's Woodleigh Amber. Congratulations to Jen's Sass (Ameesha Pina Colada) who successfully passed her clearing trials and is now ready to enter the racing and not far behind her will be our most recent new club members Dan and Stephen with their girls Jet & Diva and Skye who all went well on their first visit today (all already experienced from running at the Valleys club in Wales). We finished the day once again with many little puppy runs and bounces behind the lure, it is fantastic to watch the young ones make such progress each week. Next Sunday we will be holding a scratch meeting in rough weight groups as practice ahead of the first NPWRA Nationals that are being held at the club the following week.

Sunday 3rd April: Club Meeting

After hosting the first open meeting of the year last weekend it was back to club racing today. The weather was much kinder than the torrential down pours we had received 7 days earlier and the ground had recovered well after being underwater last Monday. Racing was in three weight groups plus Racers and Veterans over a distance of 150 yards at half a yard per lb. Winning the lightweight group and losing the last lb off her puppy handicap was Andy's Sidari Tegan who led from the start ahead of Sue and David's Looney Tunes who had to work for her second place while coming from the back of the group at 23lbs. The Middle weight group saw another win for Steve's Red Apache who keeps going from strength to strength after winning his group at the Open a week earlier. There was a big battle for second place with Sarah and Steve's Bring It Back reversing the result of the semi final against Rob and Darcia's youngster Duncton Spirit of the North. The Heavyweight group also saw a reversal of results from the heat, with Rob and Darcia's Duncton Dark Knight taking the win from Steve and Wutt's Agile Approach after a late flurry for the finish. The Racers group also doubled up as clearing trials. Congratulations to Margaret and Mark's Chester. He did not put a foot wrong, taking everything in his stride, and he will now join the race card as 'Foxy Feeling'. Winning both the heat and final in fine style was Trevor's Ebony Express who flew from the traps both times to take the win from Jen's Simply Saffron in second place. The Veteran group saw another win for Steve and Sue's Kinda Busy who won both her heat and final from Angie and Mike's Savernake Stepping Stones. A whole host of young pups continued making progress in their trials including Doug and Steph's Hope, Patrick and Jade's Fergus, Pat and Jeff's Arty, Darcia and Rob's Manny and Sid and Angie and Mike's Otter. Emma's Nessie continues to take to the track well, going through an open trap with ease on two occasions today and finally Steve and Wutt's Jack and Jen's Lhotse and Bodhi all enjoyed a play on the lure. Commiserations and speedy recovery to Pat's Mr Cooper and Sarah and Steve's Up For It, hopefully it wont be too long before they are back on the track. We are racing again next Sunday the 10th April.

Dougy and Steph's Hope (Quiver x Have you Honey) continues to look good in solo trials. Darcia and Rob's Manny (Duncton Dark Knight x Silkspun Blackbird) and Sid (Endeavour x Savernake Muntjac) continue to make good progress and it was nice to see Colin and Tina's Teddy and Steve and Wutt's Jack, both from the Agile Illusion x Savernake Top Gun litter having fun on the lure. Best of luck to all of our Andover club dogs at the Easter Charity Open next weekend and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to club racing a week later on Sunday 3rd April.

Sunday 13th March: Club Meeting

We had a good turnout for our first official club meeting of the year, the sun was shining (after a rather cold and misty start to the morning) and racing was split into five groups over a distance of 150 yards at half a yard/lb. Dougy and the boys had been busy over the last few days with the track having been rolled on friday and two tonnes of sand added to the two finishes on saturday to replace the sand that had become compacted and blown away. Many thanks to all of those that came along to help out. It was very pleasing to see a whole host of youngsters just starting out in their racing careers take to the track and they were joined by a mix of seasoned competitors to make it a day of exciting racing. The Lightweight group was won by one such youngster, with Andy's Sidari Tegan taking a fine win off a puppy allowance of 16lbs, in second place was Daphne's Little Gem followed by David and Sue's Looney Tunes who was only running in her second competitive meeting and Andy and Linda's Another Millworth. The Middleweight group saw a win for Jane's Endeavour ahead of Rob and Darcia's youngster Duncton Spirit of the North who was running in his first meeting. The Heavyweight group saw another win for Jeanette's amazing Chermayeff, Dougy and Steph's Glory Road was a gallant runner up. With only two veterans running today, Mike and Angie's Savernake Stepping Stones took the win from Phyll's Woodleigh Amber and last but not least, the Racers group was won by Trevor's Ebony Express. Once again a whole host of pups enjoyed puppy trials and it was nice to welcome Neil and Adelle with their 5 month old pup Egor. We are racing again next week. Please enter by 9pm wednesday.

Sunday 6th March: Trials day

Once again we had a great turn out for our final trials day before we start back club racing next week. We put together a programme to make the organisation of the trials easier as there were 18 multiple trials in each round followed by a number of solo's plus puppy runs and somewhere in the region of 70 dogs running in total. The weather was a little kinder than last week and the sun even tried to make its way through the clouds to give a fresh spring feel. It was really pleasing to see some of the younger dogs making good progress as they returned back to the track after their winter break, with the likes of Steve and Wutts Deano, Caroline and Peter's Jasmine, David and Sue's Willow, Andy's Tegan, Steve's Poppy, Lou's Enzo, Viv's Ole  and Rob & Darcia's Geno all looking good. Angie's Pearl went well after clearing last week and her sister Ruby passed her clearing trials today, we look forward to seeing them both progress this season. Of the slightly older batch, Mike and Angie's Wren and Sam and Pete's Ruby are looking better and better with each run and brother Billy belonging to John and Lorraine made a welcome return to multiple trials. It really was a puppy-fest once the main trials were over, with a whole host of puppies having some fun down on the lure, these included Forest, Rain, Nina, Teddy and Jack all from the Agile Illusion and Savernake Top Gun litter, Otter and Sid from Endeavour and Savernake Muntjac and Manny from Duncton Dark Knight x Silkspun Blackbird. It was lovely to welcome Jen with Lils and Sass and Emma with Nessie and Martin and Jen with Breeze and Monty who both made their first visits to a race track today and it was pleasing to see that both Nessie and Breeze were keen to chase the lure and had good first trials. We return to racing next week with a weight meeting running for club points, please enter by 9pm wednesday.

Sunday 28th February: Trials day

A bumper turn out for our first trials meeting of the year on Sunday. The sun tried to shine but there was a bitterly cold wind blowing and we all had to keep moving to keep warm. There were too many multiple and solo trials to mention, but the dogs seemed to enjoy themselves (even if the owners were struggling with the cold).Once again it was a puppy-fest with Tina and Colin's Teddy, Angie and Mike's Otter, Rain and Forest, and Lesley's Dio joining the ever expanding list of juniors at the club. Congratulations to Angie's Pearl who successfully passed her clearing trials and will soon be running as Black Pearl. Another young dog looking good at 8 months was Patrick and Jade's Fergus who went up the track like a professional despite his young age. A huge thanks to Andy (lure), Rob (blike), Dougy (everything!), John (traps), Colin (traps), Andy B (finish), Wutt (finish) and anyone else who helped out by doing a job on the day despite the harsh conditions. We are running again next Sunday, this will also be a trials meeting, but this time it will run to a programme with all dogs wishing multiple or solo trials to be pre-booked. Entries to Darcia by 9pm on wednesday. All welcome.

Sunday 21st February: Work party and trials

It seems to have been a long time coming but we were finally able to get back to the track and blow some of the winter cobwebs away. Doug has been busy during the break and had the ground in brilliant condition with a good covering of grass on both tracks. There are still a few things to be worked on before the first open of the year in just over a month but the basics were there and it was pleasing that all the equipment tested out ok when checked as part of the preparations. With not a lot of work left to do (thanks to all of Doug's hard work) we got on with setting up the track and carrying out a few trials. I think you could visibly see the exuberance of the dogs as they made their way down to the end of the track for their runs and both dogs and owners seemed to be happy to be back. Steve Millers' Jet, Bob and Poppy started with the first hand slips and they were followed by Steve and Wutt's Sam, Ben and Deano, Pete and Sam's Blue and Ruby, John and Lorraine's Charlie, Isaac and Billy, Jeanette's Cheff, Doug and Steph's Joe and Babe, Rob and Darcia's Cam, Sonic and Geno, David and Sue's Willow and Sara's Buddy and Harvey who went up with Angie's two young girls. New puppies to the track who enjoyed a play on the lure included Steve & Wutt's Jack (Agile Illusion x Savernake Top Gun) and Rob and Darcia's Sid (Endeavour x Savernake Muntjac) and Manny (Duncton Dark Knight x Silkspun Blackbird). It was also lovely to meet Jeanette's new 7 week old pup Sky (Troublemaker x Belle of the Ball). With the ground still quite wet we will await the weather forecast over the next few days before confirming if we are able to trial again next week.
